Luc de Lairesse (Gent, 8.6.53), descends from an eminent painter’s family in Liège, Belgium. (His ancestor Gérard de Lairesse, 1640-1711, was the court painter to the Dutch Emperor). Both the international and national press has used superlatives to describe Mr. de Lairesse's global contribution to dance.
He remains without a doubt one of the most popular and personal masters in dance education today. At eighteen, within the first trimester of his dancing career, Luc made an auspicious solo debut in Brussels at the Royal Opera House, in Cavalli’s “L’Ormindo”. He obtained several scholarships and his encounter with Rudolph Nureyev took him first to the prestigious school in Monaco and later to the Paris Opera Ballet. The legendary ballet star advised and watched over the young dancer for several years.
One day in the winter of 1974, when substituting for his Paris Opera teacher, Daniel Franck (@Academie Chaptal) he discovered an innate love for teaching. Vividly encouraged to pursue a teaching and coaching career while still performing, he subsequently taught a full season for the Conservatoire d’Orsay (Paris, 1975). In the summer of 1979, he was invited to New York as a guest ballet master/choreographer to the American Ballet Theatre Repertory Company under legendary ABT founder-director Lucia Chase and he joined the staff of the schools of the Joffrey Ballet, Carnegie Hall’s Ballet Arts and the Harkness Dance Theatre (HDT). Rebecca Harkness herself commissioned several works and the young artist quickly became a popular teacher and internationally acclaimed choreographer. At HDT he created for up and coming ABT star, Susan Jaffe, “Three Easy Tangos” (Astor Piazzolla, NYC 1980). A success with, both public and press alike, this ballet, brought him international attention. Between 1978 and 2003, he choreographed more than 300 works for some of the finest companies, schools and principal artists.
His ballets were broadcast by the national television stations in the USA (ABC), Europe (BRT, RTBF, NOS, ZDF etc.), Russia, China and South America. He also coordinated and organized during six years, the ballet performances for one of America’s oldest festivals, the Riverside Dance Festival. Ballet stars such as Fernando Bujones, Natalia Makarova, Susan Jaffe, Jose Carreno, Elizabetta Terabust, Ann Marie de Angelo, Carole Arbo, Alexander Goudonov, Magali Messac, Maria Teresa del Real, Yoko Morishita, Pablo Savoye and Irina Dvorovenko are amongst the many great dancers who invited him to teach, choreograph and coach them privately.
